If I am logged in and switch to any other app like text or email then I get logged out of SOL
Are you browsing the site in a private tab?
Private tabs delete the site's cookies which are necessary for staying logged in.
There are similar 'problems' with Firefox's 'Strict' privacy mode. In some cases, even when you grant a site an exception, it does not retain the login (e.g. Bookapy, Patreon, etc).
But that's self-inflicted. :-)
I used to be able to put my phone down for a couple of hours, come back to SOL, and I'd still be logged in. Now, if I switch to my email and then come back, I have to log back in again. Very inconvenient!
BTW, I have always used private tabs (incognito in Chrome).

There is nothing I can help with in this case. Chrome deleting the cookies is something that happens on your phone when you're using incognito tabs.
Just to help me understand, why do you use private tabs with SOL? More specifically, why do you use chrome in incognito mode? Is somebody else using your phone and you don't want them to know about your usage of SOL?
I ask because by using Chrome (regardless of incognito mode or not) you've basically given Google agreement to monitor your web browsing as chrome reports everything you do to google, even when in incognito mode.
Incognito only helps if you don't want to leave SOL traces on your phone in case your phone gets inspected by a different person (like a wife or the police).

And that's why I have never used Chrome. Chrome is what we used to call spyware.

Avoiding all Google properties is the best course of action. Use DuckDuckGo or Brave for search, and one of the privacy-minded browsers. I use Firefox in 'strict security' mode because I want to use a non-Chromium browser (Safari is my alernative).

Same here, FireFox and DDG for searching(on Debian Stable).
Several extensions (uBlock etc) on FF to further block it down. Someone not familiar with these couldn't use my browser setup :D
ETA: I have everything google, facebook, etc blocked by default and only rarely allow what parts are necessary. I mail companies that force me to use any google product (maps!) and in most cases just avoid the site.

Same for me. My usual collection of plugins in FF (on my Mac) is:
uBlock Origin
Disable WebRTC
DuckDuckGo Privacy essentials
I Don't Care About Cookies (kills the stupid EU cookie warning)
JavaScript restrictor
PrivacyBadger
That's in addition to FF being set in 'strict privacy' mode, set to clear cookies and history, and set to HTTPS only.
I also use tree-style tabs and have them on the left side, with no tabs at the top. That changed my life!
I'd use Safari, but the limits Apple imposes on plugins restrict some of the key plugins I want to use.
Every once in a while I fire up Edge without any plugins and visit a site (in a VM) just to see what it's like. I have no clue how anyone can use the web without content blockers!
Oh, and I only surf via VPN (certified non-logging with wireguard support).

Sometimes you can't avoid the site.
I use Safari, but it doesn't work with the State of Arizona. When I file and pay my monthly transaction privilege tax (the sales tax my wife's business collects with each sale), Safari doesn't work right. When I asked about it way back, their answer was simple: "Use Chrome." So I do for that.

Government doesn't get away with that here in the Netherlands, they have to support all major Operating Systems and Browsers. They even have to deliver documents in either pdf or the open document format (.odt, .ods, etc). MS Word format is not acceptable anymore. In practice you will still see some legacy documents but if you ask they have to deliver a pdf or open document.
Some departments are very far with that. I recently had to apply the court for protective guardianship for my mother who has reached advanced Alzheimer and the document for applying was a very long but also very good PDF with editable fields and help links which made filling in the form very easy.
Nowadays we file our taxes on line and all major browsers are supported. Before that they had a program you had to download and my Linux OS was supported too.
A Government agency not supporting one of the main Operating Systems or browsers is unacceptable.
