When I logged in today ,every story I have ever downloaded is marked as not downloaded ,
Also when I do mark it as downloaded and leave the page,
when I return to it it is marked with the green not downloaded symbol again

That sounds like a cookie problem to me. When I switch devices without using the Sync the Server service I get similar results as the information in the cookies on the first device isn't in the cookies on the second device. Also, if I accidentally open FireFox in Privacy mode none of the cookies from the last usage are carried through, thus everything is marked unread.
Sync the Server service
That's only for the forum.
I'm having the same problem as the OP, all read/download indicators are not working. It's like I've not read/downloaded any story.
Edited to add: This is a web site/server bug, and not a cookie error. SciFiSories and Finestories has the same bug.

I'm not having the problem at all, not on any site. I've even turned off my main computer and turned it back on after having to change a monitor cable that got pinched between some furniture and a wall causing some issues.
I do know the only times I've seen the loss of information described has been when I've deleted all of my cookies on a device and thus lost all of the records of what I've visited there. WLPC sites are my most visited sites, so I do tend to notice things happening on them fairly quickly.
I did just check on my tablet and the read story information from the previous time I had the system turned on was there. However, clearing the cookies, closing the browser, and reopening the browser duplicated the issue as described.

With modern computers you don't have to turn them of to change cables. You can just pull a keyboard or mouse and put in another one and it will usually just work. Same for replacing a monitor cable. If you replace the monitor with a different one you probably have to set the resolution if you do this without turning the machine off. I once replaced a hard disk without turning the machine off, although thats not advisable.

While that's true for USB cables and I believe it's also true for SATA cables, the only time I've ever seen anyone try a 'hot swap' with a HDMI cable before had issues getting the graphics card and its HDMI circuit didn't ever work again and had to go back to the DVI output. Since I can't afford to replace the graphics card it's a lot easier to close the system down and work on the cable than to take the risk of any damage.

Never had a problem pulling hdmi cables, but yes, there's a risk in damaging your hdmi port with cheap cables.

Did you accidentally log out and accessing the site as a guest?
I was showing the same issue with downloaded stories not showing the green arrow marking them as downloaded. The issue went away as soon as I aloud Google Chrome to update.

Just shows how noisy Gaggle Chrome is, so I'm glad I use the quiet Fire Fox.
It would appear Chrome misbehaves when you don't immediately follow its orders to do an update! Hmm.

Now I further understand why the government agencies require me to use it. They love that I must "immediately follow its orders".
Bugs fixed. I had inadvertently pushed the update to the servers before I finalized the code. It's fixed now and the dot and arrows look good on all screen sizes and in most shades.
