I do not know if it is possible, but would it be something to think about.
I would like to let my commenters know when I respond to their comment. Most do not have an email available. Is there a way to do that?

Do you mean comments to stories or comments to blog entries? I think this happens already.
Presumably comments on stories. Comments on blogs are sent as messages to the author (and whether or not the commenter is required to give a email address to respond to is a author setting). The story comments at the end of the story doesn't involve the site messaging system.
ok, I'd forgotten about them. If I want to open a dialogue with an author then I send him/her a message directly (Feedback to author), not via the Reader Comments.

That's a good way to do things because some of us authors regard the Reader Comments as a way for the Readers to talk to each other and not to the author as there's the Author Feedback to talk to the author.
The only time I read the Reader comments is when someone sends me an author feedback that there's something in the comments I should check out.
OK. I see clarification is needed, I want to respond to story commenters and for my stories, most are not authors.
I understand that they may not have an internal email, but from the number of comments I get from three or four of them, I think they must have premium access.

When I make a comment for a story, it gives me two options as to which name I wish to use. If I use the top name, then there's no email response allowed. If I use the bottom name, then it makes my name an active link for an email response.
I presume it's up to the individual comment poster - I've had premium access as an author for so long, I don't remember how the other kind works.
