Feature Request - "Secondary Tags"

mayhem42 ๐Ÿšซ

I see frequently, discussions of tags, and what to tag. And as a reader, the tags can be frustrating as well, not knowing if a tag is something prominent in a story, or just briefly mentioned.

A suggestion is to create an entry for "secondary tags". For tagging things that are only peripherally mentioned or encountered in a story. This would allow authors to tag things that may be triggers for some people, but if entered as a "primary" tag, would cause other readers to avoid the story.

Interesting idea.

At least, I thought so when I suggested it a dozen or so years ago.

Problem is, there's thousands of stories that are unlikely to have their codes updated. And countless authors who wouldn't bother, because they think readers shouldn't be able to choose not to read their work simply because the readers know they wouldn't enjoy the stories based on content.

And there's even a bunch of lilypads in the gene pool who assume that off-screen action should be coded. About the only instance of this that I can see making any sense is if the MC walks into the room and sees his wife fucking his (former) best friend, even if the act isn't described in play-by-play fashion, the 'cheat' code should be there - since the guy is being cheated on on camera.

Even if the cheating is off camera it should have the "cheating" tag. If the story is about the person cheating, it should be labeled as such.

Does the tag apply if the person is caught cheating on a test in school?

Yes. Or on the teacher's desk, or in the principal's office.

No, but it would include a story with someone having sex with a cheetah.

The 'cheating' tag appears under the 'couples' heading (so it doesn't apply to polyamorous relationships) and means a person is cheating on their partner. I think it would be difficult to cheat on a partner during a school test, but it might be possible to drug a partner's dog in a greyhound race, for example.

No, it could totally apply.

How could you cheat on one person in the polyamorous relationship without cheating on the others?

Ok, let's say, for example, you and joy are in a triad with someone else that we'll call... Elton. And you're all cool with outsiders joining in for some group activity when you're all present.

Now, let's say you and Elton get together with someone, who we'll call 'Freddie', for your fun. Both of you just cheated on joy.

Very contrived, but you may have a point ;-)

Hey, it was a totally hypothetical example with names chosen purely at random, but meant to illustrate the simple concept - cheating is simply a form of betrayal. As such, one can cheat, even in open relationships, depending on how the relationship is defined.

The "sharing" tag is also under "Couples" and it is "Partner has sex with selected others" (plural).

Actually, I think it more appropriate if it's about the MC being cheated on, than cheating himself. I'd wager most who don't like 'cheat' stories have some some degree of Post Traumatic Relationship Disorder.

Yes. I was told more than once from someone who was cheated on that they hate cheating stories. That's why if the story is about someone being cheated upon, even if the actual cheating isn't on screen, the code should be there. It's a real squick for some (many?).

As I answered this question before, no, I won't implement a 'secondary tags' or tiered tags. Most people can't handle the current system and adding another layer and complicating things further will be counter productive.
