Sections blocking Kindle?

StarFleet Carl 🚫

There was a comment made by a reader of my latest story, A True History, that when he went to download the Kindle Version of it, he was only able to get the first 4 chapters, and not Chapter 5. I had placed a section marking in it after Chapter 4, Assimilation, and then uploaded Chapter 5. I checked it with my iPad this morning and found the same thing happen to me.

Do I need to delete the section marking, then reinsert it? Or is that something that the server software needs to process differently?

I had changed the extension used for Kindle files from .mobi to .azw. I missed one spot in the update and the system stopped removing old versions when updating the stories.

I've fixed the bug and removed the file for you. Now it's up-to-date.

Thanks. I'd noticed the extension changes, and wondered about that.

I found this on Kboards:

Q: I usually convert my books from epub to mobi. Would there be any advantages or disadvantages to using Azw3 instead of mobi?

A: If you are converting from ePub to the Kindle, best use the AZW3 (KF8) format. AFAIK, It allows many of the more complex formatting options that ePub has had for a long time to be transferred to the Kindle. Such as indenting block quotes, proper table formatting, etc.

If you bothered to change from mobi to azw, why not azw3(KF8)?

The software that creates the files (for the last 9 years) is provided by amazon. The file itself is probably KF8 on the inside as I keep amazon's binary updated on the server. I just fixed the naming. I'm not sure how the kindle will treat the file or if it cares about the extension. It probably looks inside the file to figure out what's in it.
