Request for change to the Category Search form

Ernest Bywater ๐Ÿšซ

In the category search form you can go to each category and click to include it or exclude it (advanced option). The form also has the categories set into reasonably defined groups that make a lot of sense, in most cases.

What I'd like to see is an addition on the Advanced form to include the + / - tick boxes in the group title. This would allow a person to click on that box and it will then fill in the boxes for everything within that category with the same tick. So instead of having to go in and tick every damn category for that group I just do the one tick and it's done. I'm sure this will make it easier to set out a search, especially the exclusion searches.

Not really useful for inclusion searches as the search with only find stories tagged with all included tags. Including a whole category group will give a very narrow result, one that will be empty for most of the groups.

True, which is why I focussed on the exclusion searches. Often people ask for the title of a story they can't find and I use the search engine to look for it for them. In those cases the exclusion capabilities are extremely useful, but it's such a pain to have to tick a reject for all the fetishes etc when what they remember of the story makes it clear those don't apply, ditto with the paranormal, and many other of the groups.

Yes, but sometimes it would be nice to do an inclusive search using an inclusive or rather than and.

The way the search engine works is two fold, if it's not excluded it's automatically included. If the inclusion option is listed then it's given a priority in the listing. That's why I requested both the + and the - in the request. That way you can give the group as a whole either an exclusion or a priority inclusion. The current system does both of these (which includes what you want) but you have to do it category by category, what I'm asking for is the ability to do it group by group and make the ticking quicker and easier. If set up as I ask you can include one group and exclude another, just as you do now with the categories. It shouldn't be that hard to do, incorporate the two box and the code simply transfers the actions in the boxes to the boxes for everything in the group. Years ago I set up something like this in some data entry forms for databases in dBase IV, Oracle, and MS Access.
