I just did one of my regular checks of the site pages I view a lot and have an alert saying I've 4 unread emails, yet when I go to the inbox there is nothing new listed there. Even after checking the inbox the alert stays as it is with only the 8 read emails I'm keeping there for later action.
However, I opened the last email I read from 1 Sept and sent it to the archives, then the alert vanished. Weird behaviour.

We deleted the messages from the database directly and each author's 'unread' counter was not updated in this deletion. Once you get a new message or read a message, your counter will be updated.

Not just authors - at 04/09/2019, 00:17:21 and 04/09/2019, 00:17:32 BST (04/09/2019-09-03t23:17:21Z and 04/09/2019-09-03t23:17:32Z) I got spam from tiram22, and I'm not an author, just a basic member.

I got the same (also not an author). Reported it to Lazeez and within 10 minutes he had the bastard blocked and all spam mails removed. The usual incredibly fast response we are getting so accustomed to.

How did they penetrate SOL's internal mail system?
They created an account, logged in and used it to send the messages manually, one by one.
I've added additional access controls to the messaging system. It will make it much harder to do this again.
