I'm trying to send a story to my Kindle. When I hit the Kindle button all it does is download to my computer. What is wrong?

@spellk

That is all it does, downloads a .mobi file. You have to move it manually to your kindle or other device, or use Kindle for PC to read it on your PC.

Kindle just means download in Kindle format.

If he's registered properly with Amazon, there is an email address he can send the file to for which Amazon will send it to the Kindle through the same process by which Ebooks ordered from Amazon are sent to the Kindle.

In fact, if it's not a .mobi or a .pdf, Amazon will convert the file for you.

Today I learned something new!

My wife and I have a family Prime account and, well, she sees what books I buy and vice versa so, I wonder how well that would go over? Hell, she doesn't even know I write sexy stuff so it would be, at least, a shock. :-)

I didn't know that. I thought I had to connect her Kindle to her Mac laptop with the mobi file on it using a USB connection and manually move the ebook from her Mac to her Kindle.

I was wondering how to get my ebooks on her Kindle.

Can you be more specific on how to do it? Where does she find the email address? And can the file attached to that email be an epub (or do I have to convert it to mobi)? And what's the email look like? And then what (after she sends the email)?

Thanks.

Where does she find the email address?

Finding the email address:
Method 1 go to https://www.amazon.com
go to the page "Your Account"
go to the page "Kindle Content"
go to the page "Preferences"
got to "Personal Document Settings"
There you will see a section "Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings"
where the device name and emails are listed
IMPORTANT NOTE: a bit lower on that page there is a section "Approved Personal Document E-mail List" You must add the sender email address there.

Method 2 go to https://www.amazon.com
go to the page "Your Account"
go to the page "Kindle Content"
go to the page "Devices"
You see a list of all your kindle devices, Kindle Apps, Shoping Apps, etc.
if you click on the button in front of the device or app, you will see a popup where the device email address is mentioned.
In that popup, there is also a link: View content device, and from that link you can Update a book to it's latest version.

For me, some devices (Android Phones/Tablet, Kindle Hardware) have an address.
Some do not have one (Amazon Shopping App, Amazon Cloud Reader, iOS devices)

The addresses all looks like firstname_[\d]+@kindle.com

Method 3 On the Kindle Device go to Settings -> All Settings -> Your Account -> Send-to-Kindle Email
(May depends on your firmware revision and model...)

Sending Emails
You send the email as a regular email with an attachment.
If your attachment needs conversion (is not mobi/azw) type "Convert" in the mail subject.
you can attach file in the following format:
Kindle Format (.MOBI, .AZW), Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX), HTML (.HTML, .HTM), RTF (.RTF), Text (.TXT), JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG), GIF (.GIF), PNG (.PNG), BMP (.BMP), PDF (.PDF).
After sending the email, the attachment appears on the device library as a regular purchase.
General Remarks:
- If you have a Kindle with modem, there may be a small fee per KB for sending the email
- You need to add the sender email to the "Approved Personal Document E-mail List"
Among other I added "kindle@scifistories.com"

I do have my kindle address, I have sent stories there in the past. It just seems to be this one story.

Also related to the initial complaint: There is a Maximum File Size ties to the files, if they go over that limit, it will download to your computer rather than e-mail it to Amazon. Don't know if Laz has adjusted the limit in the past year or so, but I think it was somewhere just under 10 Megabytes, so there aren't too many stories big enough to trigger that.

The limit is 7000 KB. The limit is not from me. Over that size, Amazon's kindle email system refuses the documents. So not that I don't want to send them that way, I can't send them that way.

The story is 7820k. So there's nothing I can do?

You could download it to your computer from SoL check the final story size as a .mobi, and if over the 7,000 kb limit you can do a manual transfer to your kindle.

Ernest Bywater I'll give that a try. Thank you
