Bug in the Search

Switch Blayde ๐Ÿšซ

I was looking for a recent post that mentioned Rachel Ross. So I did a search on "Rachel Ross" (without the quotes).

Not finding the thread I was searching for, I decided to simply search on "Rachel." The problem is, the system keeps adding "Ross" when I type in "Rachel."

Sounds like your trouble is that your browser remember the sentence Rachel Ross.

I think it's Lazeez trying to do what Google does by making suggestions as you type. But Google puts them underneath to click on. In the SOL Search, it actually added "Ross" when I typed in "Rachel." I don't remember my browser (Safari) ever doing that.

Lazeez, I somehow got it to search simply on "Rachel" using a lot of backspace-deletes and stuff to get rid of the "Ross" it filled in. Then I was able to do it on "rache." Now when I enter "Rachel" it doesn't fill in "Ross."

The "suggestions" pop up under the search field with the searches I already did. So when I type "Rac" all three previous ones pop up underneath (Rachel Ross, Rachel, and rache).

As I continue to type, when I have "Rachel", the "rache" no longer shows in the pop-up. That's good.

I didn't create that suggestions popup. It's Safari remembering your previous searches. It does that whenever an input field is of type 'search'.

Go to Safari's preferences and click the 'Search' tab. It's either the 'Enable quick website search' or the 'Show Favourites' that's responsible for this behaviour.

The pop-up wasn't the problem. I like that. I use that with Google.

It's the search field itself. When I typed in "Rachel" it added "Ross" to it in blue (this is after the first search of "Rachel Ross"). I'd delete the "Ross" and it would come back. I don't remember how I got rid of it, but once I did and did a search on "Rachel" without the "Ross" everything went back to normal. It no longer adds words in the search field (but it does offer suggestions in the pop-up).

Switch, I agree with Zellus on this being an issue with your browser. One of the default settings on many browsers is to make suggestions when you're typing in a search field. I have that feature disabled in my Firefox browser and I tried a number of searches and didn't not experience the issue you have. When I tried the same searches in the Chrome browser which I've not personalized or disabled anything I ran into the issue you mention.

But it's never happened before. And I use the Google search field many times a day. I get the pop-up, but it has never filled in data in the search field. And now that I got around it adding "Ross" and have more than one in the pop-up, it stopped adding "Ross." If it was the browser, it wouldn't have stopped.

I'd still suggest you check the browser setting, especially if there was a recent upgrade. One of the default actions with the 'suggest' settings in browsers is they only match on partials, so once you pass a point on what's in their list they stop. Thus if the list has - listen - listener - and you type list it should offer them, but if you liste it should cut out as it no longer has any partial matches.

However, whatever the problem is it's local to you system because I can't duplicate it as happening on SoL and Lazeez says it's not part of his code.
