I noticed a new story yesterday that I thought sounded potentially interesting but I didn't have time to read it.

Today I looked in the 'New Story' list but couldn't find it. I tried looking for what I remembered the author's name to be, but couldn't find them.

Then I tried the SOL Twitter feed and bingo, there it was:
"
New Story:
The Shatters by ouevre
"

When I clicked on the link, SOL gave me a page (https://storiesonline.net/s/11901/the-shatters)
that said:

"
The story 'The Freshman' by 'JRyter' was not found.

It was deleted on 2018-06-30 23:16:17.
Reason for deletion: Deleted at author's request

Okay, I'm disappointed that the author pulled the story, but why tell me about an unrelated JRyter story also being pulled?

That's because Storiesonline recycles stories id-numbers.

@Zellus

Thanks, but that doesn't explain why SOL is informing readers of two deleted stories on a page specific to a single story.

I think Lazeez must be working on this issue. The page now says:
"
The story 'The Freshman' by 'JRyter' was not found.

It was deleted on 2018-06-30 23:16:17.

We found a story with the same ID number. Were you looking for:
Breakfast in Bed by Blowjob Suzuki ?

I think Lazeez must be working on this issue.

I don't think so, this behaviour is consistent with my mental model of how Lazeez has the story IDs and story database set up. Back when story IDs were in the 30k..75k region, the story ID was the unique identifier of a story; however due to the discontinuous range causing database delays, he changed it (?added a layer of indirection?) and started serving new story IDs as the lowest free number 10k+ (observed behaviour). The problem with this is that a newly deleted story that's not got an ID in the 30k+ range will have its old ID served up as the next ID to be used, thus increasing the likelihood of getting multiple deletions (of the same ID but different stories) and seeing this problem.

My suggestion above will not stop it happening, but will make it quite a lot less likely to be seen.

Updated:

I've posted about deleted story weirdness elsewhere on a related issue, but now think Lazeez should have a moratorium on story ID reuse of at least 30 days, the length of the new story list, to avoid/hide these issues.

Fixed. Now it behaves as expected.

I don't know how important the Twitter feed is in attracting people to SOL but I have a couple of suggestions that might improve it.

Convert story genres into hashtags eg #ScienceFiction #Fantasy, #Romance, #Erotica.

Dilute the dependence on new story details by also posting major download-count milestones for stories eg at 50,000 reader intervals.

@awnlee jawking

That is an excellent idea. I might use it.

Speak his name, and your wishes will be granted (assuming their reasonable, that is)!
