Forum: Bug Report and Feature Requests

Not exactly a bug, but an important process - if possible

Al Bywater ๐Ÿšซ

I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but I can't readily find where in this forum, so here I go on about it.

When you first opened this up for use it was easy to see what was new, but now it's almost impossible to tell where a new post is because the only indications I have about having viewed a post are:

1. my browser says history marks the thread as read,

2. the date of the latest post.

Neither of the above are any good because in the forum list and thread list the browser will show it if I've been to that thread or forum page in the last couple of weeks, even if there are posts there I've not read. And the date is only good if I can remember the exact date and time I last checked, and then I'm not sure if the forum is showing your date and time or mine.

With GG and the vBulletin forums I've used the system had ways to track and show me where there were posts I'd not read yet. That would be extremely useful to have. Already I'm starting to ignore some thread because it's too much of a hassle to open them all up to see if there's something new. That will lead to a lowered participation rate by some of us.

I've already implemented visited threads/messages dimming a couple of hours ago. You may need to refresh the site's scripts (by holding down the shift key on your keyboard and clicking the reload button on your browser's window a couple of times) to see the difference.

This works on the browser side, so if you clear the site's data from your browser or you browse the forum in 'incognito mode', then this won't work.

thanks for the tip, just did that and saw a significant change in thread colour depth for some threads.

that tip and change is working on the sub-forum page but not on the main forum page of:

https://storiesonline.net/d/

even tried the tip above on it twice - no change in colour depth for the sub-forum page links visited.

@Al Bywater

the index page is not done yet. I'll get to it today eventually.

By the way, now you can edit your own post and delete them too.

Again, you will need to refresh the scripts to see the difference.

Thanks for that (the editing and delete buttons). But, to echo what ebywater's suggestion, I REALLY liked GG's ability to tell you how many unread posts existed on each thread. That way, if I'm away for several days/weeks, I can focus on either the fewest or most posts. But, more importantly, I can tell if there are reply's I haven't addressed in a 50+ thread.

I'd assume you'd need to have each user log in to accomplish this, but you're essentially already doing that (otherwise you can only read a single chapter of each story if you're not signed in).

However, I can see it being a lot of overhead to code.

Currently I'm doing this on the client side. Which means that the info about what you've accessed and what you didn't aren't saved on the site in your account. That data is being saved on the computer/device you're using to access the forum.

In order to do what you're asking for, then I need to somehow stuff into the index page or the page that displays the topics in each section enough data to allow the client side code to discern how many postings in each thread you haven't read. That's a lot of data.

I may do this in the future if I can figure out a way to keep the overhead low. But for now, a simple 'updated thread/section' marker (white background) would have to suffice. Remember, google watches every little thing you do on the net in order to monetize your activities on the net. I have no such motives.

That's fine. Just noting things which would be nice. Personally, I'd rather monitor the posts individually than have big brother watching over my shoulder while I'm perusing porn! 'D
