Images not displayed in epub or mobi files

draregerreip ๐Ÿšซ

Hi,
I downloaded the story six times a day in both epub and mobi format.
None of the images contained in the story were displayed in either of the files downloaded.
Is it normal? Is there something I am doing incorrectly?
I opened both epub and mobi files in the calibre reader as well as kindle for PC for the mobi file. After further verification, the images are indeed in the zipzed html files but I can't see them either in the mobi file or the epub file.
Thanks for your help.

After looking into the html code of the zipped files, I realized that the images are stored on a separate server. Is there any way to integrate them in the epub or mobi file?

With a story like 'six times a day', the pictures are 200+MB. If I were to embed them in the file, first it would be a huge download. Second, most epub readers would choke on it.

Most readers already choke on it simply because the story is already 20+MB of text.

I may update the EPUB creator at some point in the future to include images, but for now, I'll let it be.

You should at least include the cover image (if there is one). Individual chapter graphics, unless specific and limited in scope (numbers), I'd reject out of hand. Maybe institute a number of images limit, not including any images if there are too many included in the story. That seems like a fair trade off. Either that, or an option to select 'low-quality book images'.

I would probably go for either a hard limit, or one that scales by the number of chapters.

Six Times a Day is an extreme outlier in almost every respect. The wilder part is, IIRC, the "full quality" images aren't even on SOL, as SpacerX didn't think Laz would go for that. (Of course as I recall, even on Spacer's site, the full quality images aren't in-line with the story)

You could try contacting the author, they may send you a copy of the images, or a story copy with the images.

Pierre,

I have images in some of my stories, and I have a DropBox account where I have them available to readers as high definition images which are better than the ones I can post on SoL when I started doing it. You may wish to contact the author and suggest he do the same.

My latest book has full page black & white graphic images for each section break (7 in all). It's my best looking, most professional book yet, but I never even considered including it under SOL. I also have one story, "The Cuckoo's Progeny" where an included image (only one) is central to the plot, showing what a supposed tattoo each member bears on their foreheads and wrists, so readers get a feel for what everyone is reacting to.

I may have to consider posting them if they are now allowed, though I may make them more limited (my normal high-res images lowered to 72-dpi so when they're displayed full size, you get a small high-res image (which is how I create my cover images)).

Guys,

Thanks a lot for all your answers. I see what you mean about the size of the generated epub, I didn't think about it beforehand.

What I finally did is that I downloaded the zip file, uploaded the zip in Calibre, then generated the epub and finally used the Calibre tools to integrate the external images into the epub. The result is a 48.5Mb file ... which is not a problem for me as I read only on PC (windows) or tablet/phablet (android).

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best

Pierre

For six times a day specifically, you can get the story in epub file with the images on SpacerX's website - http://www.spacerxstories.com/mainMenu.htm
