My fingers twitch a lot, so I sometimes push a mouse button by accident. In this case, I was using the mouse to move the cursor to vote on a story and accidentally pushed the left button as the cursor passed over the "vote" button. That produced an error message: "Error! Invalid vote value," and I could not cast my vote. Please fix it so that it is possible to recover from that sort of error.

I had that happen once, and I made the vote by going to the Home Page, clicking on my story count number to open the Stories Read History and using that form to enter the vote.
Okay, I tried reloading the story and it worked fine. That had never occurred to me.

Reloading the page (and refreshing your cookies) is the browser equivalent of rebooting your machine. It fixes most problems and saves the expects from having to dig any deeper.
