Forum: Bug Report and Feature Requests

Story Comments issue.

The link to add a new comment is at the bottom of the list, but new comments show up at the top of the list.

This is confusing, especially when the list of comments is long enough to be taller than the visible page.

I just made the same comment three times on one story (and of course, there's no option to delete a comment) because I thought I'd hit cancel instead of post when I didn't either see my comment or see a refresh link.

I moved the link to the top.

The creator of a comment should be able to edit AND delete the comment.

Here on the forum yes, but not in the story comments.

We understand that's the current limitation, but seeing as the comments are catching on (and no one's yet complained about abuse), we're hoping Lazeez can extend the functionality. Users typically don't notice something is wrong until it's posted, and one user (with the initials DS) retyped the same message three times because he couldn't see where it posted. The ability to delete those duplicates would benefit everyone.

I suspect he limited the functionality because he wasn't sure anyone would use it, and also because he didn't want the author to selectively remove critiques, but that's not what we're asking for.

Having thought about this I'd agree, except the ability to edit & delete should be voided when a reply has been made. This would allow deleting the multiple posts as above and fat-fingered typo edits, but prevent context-changing which would cause replies to become confusingly meaningless.

ETA: Of course, if someone composes a reply whilst the edit/delete is being processed, this leads to a race condition. My thoughts here are notices like:

..The post you are replying to has been deleted, please post a new comment

..The post you are replying to has been changed, please review your reply

..The post you are editing/deleting has been replied to, changes are not now permitted.

with the latest timestamp of the subject posting being returned with the edit/delete/reply, and it only goes ahead if that thread (post plus any replies) has no later timestamp (from other edit/delete/replies).

As in a conflict between Latino and Filipino comments?

Seriously, though, it he simply ported over the current code, it would work like the forum does (even if he reduces certain functionality, like adding links). If someone replies to a deleted link, it would still appear, but the message it referred to would no longer be there. Since there's no link between messages, it wouldn't really matter much.

I think the one requested change is sufficient. Let's not be greedy, asking for the moon, especially before we see how widely used the features are. I'm willing to get small, incremental upgrades. But requesting entirely new features not found elsewhere on the site in an (as yet) little used function? That's asking a bit much.
