Automatic paging of long chapters and offline reading

xyz_abc 🚫

Hi,
I posted but my problem with saving chapters

https://storiesonline.net/d/s3/t1744/story-saving-and-title-generation

after automatic paging of long chapters was turned on again.
I started thinking about the topic and wanted to ask if "the automatic paging of long chapters" could be made a feature like the mobile version of SOL?
Because automatic paging of long chapters is a good feature then you read online but if you read stories also on a mobile device while without wifi. Because if you click on next it won't load page two from your sd-card but try to conect to SOL whick doesn't work because your offline.

My approach to this is to deal with on-line and off-line reading separately. On-line reading is paged as it comes from the site. For off-line I collect the chapter(s) in the zip file and open at my leisure.

It's hard to make this functionality optional. It's either ON or OFF.

The obvious solution to this problem is to download the ebook files to your mobile device and read offline. Of course you'll need a premier membership, but that only costs ¢20 per day.

Maybe this was intended as as a joke, but I suspect not. I'm sure you meant "a month" not "a day".

No, he meant per day.

The ¢ symbol is for cent or $0.01 so ¢20 = $0.20

Paid memberships are:

30 days for $6.99 = $0.23/day

90 days for $17.99 = $0.20 / day

6 months for $34.99 = $0.19/day

1 year for $67.99 = $0.19/day

I've got to start paying attention. One, lame though it excuse, I'm used to seeing the cent sign behind the number 20¢ not in front of it. :(

Edited to remove typo.

Ok, it was just an idea to make a third version to display SOL.

- classic online

- mobile online

- offline

But if it's not feasible it just means more work to download all subpages too. It's only a bit more work if you have to redownload a 20+ chapter story with 3 or more subpages after a big rewrite of a story.

But couldn't be atleast in the mobile version multiple page chapters be listed as:

Chapter name:

# page 1 /*the actual link to page 1*

# page 2 /*the actual link to page 2*

...

# page x /*the actual link to page x*

Then a tool like flashgot would be helpful to download multi-page chapter stories withput having to save every file by opening each in a new tab and then saving it manually with strg+s for transfer to your mobile device.

Just an idea.

I don't know about you, but instead of making lazeez work, I would go for the obvious solution.

More work?

I just asked if it would be possible, if it's feasable to make "the automatic paging of long chapters" without much extra work into an option in the "Account Info and Preferences" settings that a user could choose "on or off".

It's not doable. Therefore my other idea was to maybe list multipage chapters with direct links to the individual pages of a chapter in the table of contents. If it's doable without much extra work.

The links themself exist allready as page x or next link. They would only need to be added to the index table of content page. Then a tool like flashgot would find the sub pages links.

That's still work.

I guess you don't use SOL enough, or for long enough to think it's worth supporting.

Hi,

I just liked the long chapters, as they were posted in 2002, better for offline reading.

I also thought that the index page was script generated and it would only be an simple script adtion which would maybe look like:

if page is longer

then ad chapter x page 1 of y.

Instead of a simple ad chapter x.

If it's really that much more work then I'd say: Discussion closed.

I don't want to be seen as the ungrateful user, who uses Lazeez Jiddan great site for free since 14+ years and allways wants more freebies.

FOURTEEN YEARS FOR FREE?

And you're asking for him to make changes so that you can keep using the site without contributing anything?

I think how you described it yourself is very true.

If you can't afford being a Premier (of Canada) member, pay by sending comments (polite ones, please, even if the content is negative) to authors whose stories you read. Or at least, vote an appropriate number. If people really, really didn't like a story, why do they keep reading it? To one-bomb it?

xyz_abc 🚫

I simply liked the old display type better for offline reading because of my brwoser allways trying to go online if I hit the next button accidentally.
I was then happy then I found the old big chapters back and asked later if there was a way to make them comeback in a permanent way.
I was told no and after explaining why I asked. I got reprimand about using the site for such a long time without contributing anything.
So I'll go back to reading, voting, giving fedback and reporting errors what happen to the webmaster.
Thanks Lazeez Jiddan for your great site.
Thanks you authors for your great stories and all the work you put in them.
But this might have been the first and last feature request
I've send in to maybe help make a great site even greater.
To the moderator please close this thread.

When I copy for offline reading, I just copy the chapter without the link buttons, that way all of the chapters are there and I can jump to any of them by searching for the chapter number. No 'next' button to worry about.
