I generally go on this site with my phone. Currently a Google Pixel
Recently, (around the same time that changes were made for the home page) I noticed a change in the forum performance. Previously, I would open the topic, read it, and then, when I finished, I would have to select the green button to tell it that I had read it. Annoying, but ok. A month or so ago, I noticed that it seemed to know that I had read it. Green button turns grey. Great. No complaints, and there was lots of other issues going on, so I didn't add anything to the bandwidth, even if it would have been complimentary.
Today, it is all back to the old way. If I have read it, I have to select the button or it stays lit.

Minor annoyance, but SOMETHING is going on.

I haven't changed anything in the forum for a long time.

The read/unread data for the forum is saved in the browser's localstorage database. If you access the site with an incognito tab, then this database gets cleared by the browser.

If you use the site with a normal tab, then the data is saved and used.

I suspect that you were using the site using incognito tab and had to click the green circle, and then for a while you switched to a regular tab, and then you went back to incognito.

So, if you want the functionality, use the site in a normal tab.

Not incognito. It's always signed on since I have about 20 open tabs at all times. I have several LONG stories that I read one chapter a day or so. Other stories are waiting for me to get motivated. I also have various author pages where I am working through their work.
I also keep the inactive contributors page open and I am working my way back through the "Lost Stories" forum pages.

It's not a big issue for me. I was just confused as to what is going on.

Sync Read to Server can help you save the forum reads.
