Recently I was voting on a story that I had just read. I noticed that if I select a score it automatically backs you out to the bottom of the page while telling you the current score. The VOTE button doesn't seem to do anything. Is that now redundant? Is the vote actually recorded?

The button is redundant.
Selecting the value triggers the vote. When I added the functionality to trigger the vote by selecting the value, I removed the 'vote' button, but voting dropped to 20% of the daily vote count.
It turned out that without the button, people didn't seem to know what to do.
So I put the button back on. If you turn off JavaScript, the button allows to still vote. But since almost nobody turns off JavaScript anymore, then the vote button is redundant, but it's needed for reader to know that they can vote.
