Forum: Bug Report and Feature Requests

Unusual forum behaviour regarding position of replies.

Pixy ๐Ÿšซ

I replied to the OP of a thread (Story Macguffin Help Needed) by AJ, in 'Authors Hangout', (AJ- That's probably the reason right there....) and the reply didn't end up at the bottom, like usual, but half way down the list of responses.

Is this errant behaviour or things working as intended?

It looks right to me- you replied to the original post, then Pixy replied to that post you just made, you gave AJ the Thumb's up.
But earlier AJ did a post to the thread (not a reply to their original post), then others replied to that new post, not the original post.
Hence your reply to the original post wasn't at the end of all the posts, even though it was made later.

@Pixy

Is your setting 'Threaded View' or 'Flat View'?

Yeah, threaded view makes it easy to see who replied to what and when.

Ummm.... Flat view apparently...

But replies to the original post always ended up at the bottom didn't they?

@Pixy

No, it was on threaded. I thought the 'flat' was telling me what I was on, but it was actually to change it. So I've changed it back.

I like threaded, as it does indeed make it easier to see who replied to whom and when, but it doesn't explain why my reply to the OP ended up halfway down the list of replies when it should have been added to the end/bottom...

Only when in flat view.

When in threaded view, that will only occur if people us the Reply to Post button in the posts.
But if they use the Reply to Topic button, then more recent posts can appear before older posts if people use the Reply to Post button on older posts (as has happened here).

Maybe the issue is my end, but on the screen, my post of 08/06/2025, 22:37:31 is sandwiched between a post of Mat Twassel 27/05/2025, 14:16:42 and AJ's post 26/05/2025, 17:49:33. Where in fact, it should be after Big Ed Mags post of 26/05/2025, 20:27:27, shouldn't it?

Correct.
Exactly where it should be.

Where in fact, it should be after Big Ed Mags post of 26/05/2025, 20:27:27, shouldn't it?

Nope.

You made a post responding to the opening post. The last post made before yours to the opening post was the one by Mat Twassel, so your new post followed his.

All the other posts after Mat's weren't made in response to the opening post.
Aj's post a few hours after Mat's was made using the Reply to Topic button, not the Reply to Post button in the opening post.

So looking at things in the Threaded view, your post is exactly where it should be.

But that is incorrect.

The last post before mine was Big Ed Mags post of 26/05/2025, 20:27:27, so my past should have been after his, because Ed made a post responding to the OP fourteen or so days before my comment.

If you look at the bottom of the opening post, you will see the list of people that made a response to that post. Big Ed is not in that list.

It was made in response to a post that AJ made to the thread later on (as shown by Big Ed's name in the list of those that replied to it).
So it is in the correct place.

Everything is in the correct place when being viewed by the Threaded view; keeping in mind that it's position will vary depending on whether a post replied to a particular post, or if it replied to the topic.

If you want all the posts to appear in chronological order- regardless of what post they are referring to- you need to use the Flat view.
