It seems that whatever tracks what stories I read no longer works. The stories are no longer highlighted and chapters I have read are no longer highlighted.

That's controlled by browser history.
If you've cleared your browser history, or are using a private/incognito tab to access the site or using a new computer/phone with no history, then none of the links accessed will be colored as you expect.
Did not clear browser history, am not using a private/incognito tab. Story I read yesterday was not colored today. When I opened the story, none of the chapters I had read were colored.
