A few suggestions to make SOL more perfect

OmegaPet-58 ๐Ÿšซ

[All of this is from the perspective of a brand-new user of the site. I hope this is helpful.]

On the tag definitions page:
1. This might be fixed already, but I think there (used to be?) still places where the tags were shown as abbreviations or acronyms. In the tag definitions list, any tag that (still?) shows as an abbreviation should be listed. For example, "Multiple (Mult)" or "MaleSub (Male Submissive)", "ENF (Embarrassed Nude Female)". More examples are RAAC and BTB.
2. Sort the tags into alphabetical order, OR, add group headings as they are on the author's posting page (with the checkboxes). To a newbie reader, the long list appears very disorganized.
3. The list of Genres is not sorted. Not by popularity, and not in alphabetical either.

On the list of stories pages.
1. The very first thing shown is a non-functional "Jump to contents" link that doesn't actually do anything in my browser.
2. By examining the source code, I figured out that the disc icon is marking read/unread. I have no idea what the flag does, even though I've been on the site for years. Ideally, they should be explained at the top of the list. Or they could go to the bottom with the "* Not enough votes" footnote.
3. For the sake of us who have issues scrolling, the "Add/edit notes" icon should be either (a) in the upper right next to the disc and flag icons, or (b) on the same row as the Bookmark and Epub buttons. On a list of fifty stories, the extra lines take up a lot of space and require a lot of scrolling.

On the Quick Stories Search page.
1. The Search Again button is inside the table row of the first story listed, instead of being the first bordered table row next to the search box.
2. For some reason, on THIS particular page extended symbols such as curly quotes are shown as [?] symbols instead of what is expected.
3. The "* Not enough votes" footnote is missing.
4. The orange up/down "show details" toggle is not explained even thought this is the only page that uses it.
5. The read/unread disc and mysterious flag icons are missing.

On the front page of a story when you click "Show Details"
1. the "* Note enough votes" is missing. Ideally, it would show after, and only when it is being used. Like this:
##,### Words | Votes: * | Score: * (* Indicates not enough votes)

Story details, throughout.
1. The minimum number of votes to get past the asterisk is 20, I think. EXCEPT, if you post a vote on a story, the current rating (but not counting the vote you just cast) is revealed to you. The reveal is like getting a reward for voting, I guess. Can we LOWER the minimum to 15 or even to 12?
2. Are there any reasons comments aren't showing in the counters, like this:
##,### Words | Comments: * | Votes: * | Score: * (* Indicates not enough responses)
For comments, the minimum should be 5 instead of 20, I think.

Lots of good suggestions. It will take a while to deal with all of them. Some would require quite a bit of work to implement.

I'll discuss some here.

3. The list of Genres is not sorted. Not by popularity, and not in alphabetical either.

Need some work. Due to interface constraints (length of tag) many abbreviations can't be expanded.

1. The very first thing shown is a non-functional "Jump to contents" link that doesn't actually do anything in my browser.

This is for blind readers using screen readers.

2. By examining the source code, I figured out that the disc icon is marking read/unread. I have no idea what the flag does, even though I've been on the site for years. Ideally, they should be explained at the top of the list. Or they could go to the bottom with the "* Not enough votes" footnote.

Basically the flags are a selection tool. It can be used to create lists or batch bookmarking.

It also can mean whatever you want it to mean. You can flag stories you really really like or stories to avoid, or anything really.

Um... If you have issues scrolling, then why did you set your listings to show 50 stories at a time?

On the Quick Stories Search page.
1. The Search Again button is inside the table row of the first story listed, instead of being the first bordered table row next to the search box.

I need a screenshot of this. On my systems it stays next to the field.

2. For some reason, on THIS particular page extended symbols such as curly quotes are shown as [?] symbols instead of what is expected.

That's a problem with the search engine in use. It's stuck in 2008. I'm planning an upgrade to a modern one, but it takes a lot of changes to implement. But, that's coming.

3. The "* Not enough votes" footnote is missing.
4. The orange up/down "show details" toggle is not explained even thought this is the only page that uses it.
5. The read/unread disc and mysterious flag icons are missing.

Many of your suggestions involves a lot of screen clutter. I'll have to make sure that the fix doesn't clutter things up. Most people get tired from screen clutter. A cluttered site chases new users away.

Actually I raised it recently from 16 to 20, so not lowering anytime soon. I made it 20 so that it only shows after the outlier removal algorithm kicks in at 20 votes.

2. Are there any reasons comments aren't showing in the counters, like this:
##,### Words | Comments: * | Votes: * | Score: * (* Indicates not enough responses)
For comments, the minimum should be 5 instead of 20, I think.

We'll see. Again, screen real estate and white space will be affected.

Unless there's some better way to send you a .JPG through the system, I'm using OneDrive to provide this image of "Quick Story Search":

It looks like it has to do with the input box not changing sizes like it should. I seemed to fix it by just changing

style="width:calc(99% - 8em);"

to

style="width:calc(98% - 8em);"

Fixed this one.

Due to interface constraints (length of tag) many abbreviations can't be expanded.

How about using the < abbr> tag for those?
e.g.,
< abbr title="Reconciliation at any cost">RAAC

And then, later,

Um... If you have issues scrolling, then why did you set your listings to show 50 stories at a time?

Most people get tired from screen clutter. A cluttered site chases new users away.

Respectfully, the story lists throughout the site would look a lot less cluttered and easier to use if [Add/Edit Note] was simply another similar button next to the Bookmark - Zip - EPub buttons. That is, on the same line.

Also, on the "Recent Top Stories" page, among several others, there is an extraneous additional completely blank line above the [Add/Edit Note] button making the list even longer, unnecessarily.

Smaller tightened up table boxes for each story would make the web site (just a little bit) nicer and look more polished, I think. And make the site a little easier to use because you could see more stories at once with less scroll-scroll-scroll.

I think 50 stories per page is a default. I never noticed that it could be changed.

Below is an example showing the extra space in the "Recent Top Stories" page, and a comparison tighter listing of the same story.
