Email replies

What is the correct way to reply to an email?

I sometimes send an email to authors to give some positive feedback. When they respond I sometimes want to reply to them.

When I click reply, do I have to delete all the text from the previous emails that automatically gets filled in on the body, or do I just type my message above all that text and click send?

Just to clarify I mean in the context of this site. Sometimes when I reply on the site it seems like my email does not go through so I thought that I may be doing something wrong.

@hunterblackchair

No reply can answer for every author on the site.

My answer would be "To do what you think is best". After all, that is all that we can really do in life. My experience (and again I stress that this is not, and can not, be the answer for everyone) is that any reply is better than no reply. I find feedback of any description (positive/negative/somewhere in-between) to be rare and fleeting.

I'm sure the more prolific and technically adept writers garner a healthy amount of messages a day, but I am more a 'one a month' writer. With that in mind, I make the suggestion for consideration, that if you think the writer is popular, then include the previous message, as it will save them having to go through their message folder to read the previous correspondence. If you think the author is more on the fringe (you can get a rough idea from the amount of times the writers work has been read) then don't bother as it's more than likely that the last person to send them a message was, in fact, you...

This is general for all email.

When you reply to an email you create an answer to the message in the original email. Leaving the previous message makes it easier for the recipient to see what you reply to.

If your reply has nothing to do with the previous message you are not replying, you are basically creating a new email. In that case you only use reply to conveniently set the reply email address. You should remove the original text and change the subject to reflect your new email.

or do I just type my message above all that text and click send?

That's what I do.
