0 words?

Just looking through weekly top downloads, and saw that Going Down Green River by Mat Twassel is listed as 0 words, and on checking, it clearly has more than that; wc gives 172 words (if I've got it right). Is this a counting bug or just a quirk of the system for 0KB flash stories?

ETA: it also didn't show the 'click for more text', probably because it's just a single paragraph.

ETA2: ...although it did register as a download.

ETA3: And now it reads 179 words in the listing, so something's fixed.

My flash fiction story "Coming Home" is listed as 741 words (with a size of 3kb) so it's not a quirk of flash fiction but maybe one that short.

There was another of MT's further down the listing listed as 0KB, 176 words (I think) but split into 3 or 4 paragraphs, thus the explicit mention of a single paragraph. I've also seen one in the past few weeks which had 4 paragraphs, 2 short, one wall of text with the bulk of the content, and a single short sentence after the 'click for more' (That might have been Infinite Clothespegs, not sure)

Deserving of a 1 vote as so few words cannot be called a story.

I seem to recall a social media challenge to write a thriller in 10 words.

Actually, it does have a story to it, and I think it could have been tightened up some, reducing the word count still further. It also has a wonderful twist at the end.

What's the title? Unfortunately the search by size facilities aren't granular enough to cater for number of words.

Going Down Green River as noted in the first post. I've not identified the one with the odd 'click for more' break, and I've stopped looking (it wasn't Infinite Clothespins)

ETA: Some more bizarre behaviour on this story: doing an advanced search on the full title and authorname correctly identifies it, but searching on just the title gives "Sorry, no matching stories were found"

@madnige

but searching on just the title gives

You must have mistyped something.

In the advanced search page, putting any part of the title in the title field finds the story. I tried 'Green river' and it found it with another story. 'Down green' also found it.

Nope; if I add 'Mat Twassel' as author in the search (back, paste or type author, start search), it finds it. If I copy the title (text, not link) from that result and search for that as a title with no author in a new search, it doesn't. A repeat of that wth ' River' trimmed from the title finds nothing, trimming ' Green River' gives eight results NOT including GDGR, crucially, 'Down Green' (that capitalisation, as it was trimmed from a cut-paste from a story listing) found nothing, as did 'Down green'. The last result shows a difference in behaviour between my basic account behaviour and your presumably premier (or higher) account. The same with 'Green River', for me it finds just the Ka Hmnd story; try it again from a basic account, it looks like there's a rabbit away somewhere.

Oops, my bad.

Thank you. And you're right, that's a pretty good twist.

Actually, it does have a story to it

Short story attributed to Ernest Hemingway; "For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn."

If that is considered a story, then the newspaper small ads are overflowing with stories.

A hundred plus words posted with an illustration is not a story, it's a caption.

Well don't tell Dr. Seuss. His book Green Eggs and Ham only has 50 words and it will never sell a single book let alone be loved by children.

The word count is 775. Considerably more than 100+

But feel free to continue to compare apples and orangutans.

Pedantic note: 775=100+675, so the word count is 100+

This is the same sort of thing as adverts claiming 'covers up to 100% of grey' - all that's saying is that it will not cover more grey hair than you've got, which is an empty claim, everything meets it. Water (having no effect) meets the claim, even peroxide bleach turning all hair grey meets the claim.
Another advertising claim that annoys me is the (typicaly car companies) claim of 'all new'. To me, this is the same as them saying

We're going to ignore all the carefully optimised and debugged components we've used before, there's no chance of getting a spare whatsit from a breaker's yard 'cos they won't fit, all spares and replacement parts have to be our hideously expensive shoddy manufacturers spares that will break in six months, but tough, you're stuck with them - even the bolts are non-standard, so your tools won't fit either

Obviously lies, most of the major sub-assemblies will be common between models, but if they lie that egregiously in the adverts, would you trust them well enough to buy from them? /rant

The number of words might be rounded to the nearest KB. 499 words is closer to 0 KB than 1 KB.

Is this a counting bug or just a quirk of the system for 0KB flash stories?

There was a problem with the story's initial posting and it ended up with the image only with no text.

It has been fixed since and now it shows 170+ words.

Misreading the title, most people will know what you mean when you mention the 'f' word or the 'n' word. Are there any candidates for an 'o' word, a word so profane or offensive it can't be used in snowflake society?
