When I type in either an author's name or story name (including ones that I know are listed) the name just disappears like it was before anything was typed in. Just like the reset.

Ok. I can get exactly the result you describe IF after entering the name I click on the search button at the bottom of the page instead of the start search button just above the entry boxes for title, author etc.
Perhaps you could try this and see if your search produces results?
If not then describing exactly what info you input and exactly what buttons you press would greatly assist in helping you.
