Forum feature request - hide/ignore thread/topic

Updated:

Many forum topics get sidetracked or derailed into off topic conversations. I would like a way to flag these topics so I don't waste time checking them again when new posts are made. For instance, I check the Lost Stories forum quite a bit both for new stories to read as well as to try to help people find the stories they are looking for. Often a topic will get derailed and I no longer want to keep reading it, but the topic shows back up at the top of the forum with unread posts. Sometimes I'll recognize the subject line, but many times the subject is vague and I waste my time opening the topic to check for a new post only to realize it is one of "those" topics.

Is there a way to hide the topic or mark it as permanently read or ignored? If not, can that be added?

Thanks

That's a feature, not a bug.

That's a feature, not a bug.

The feature he's asking for is to be able to flag those so they no longer show the green dot when a new post is made.

There are many threads I simply click on the green dot to turn it gray knowing that I'm no longer interested in new posts. He's asking for a way to automate that.

Shift-click the green dot should mark it permanently read.

Thanks and that is really good to know.

I don't normally read the forums on my iPad, but in the instances that I do, is there a way to do the same thing on mobile?

Thanks again.

There is no button combo on mobil. If I were to implement the same functionality, I would need to add an additional button with such function, crowding the interface more than it's already crowded.

We'll see.

That's cool, like I said, I mostly use a desktop PC for reading the forums so this isn't a big deal to me. However, more and more people are switching to mobile first, so it might be worth looking into something like this. Maybe put the button/control/whatever on the topic page rather than the topic list. This will keep the topic list interface the same, but give somebody reading a topic the ability to mark it as permanently read.

Just a thought. Thanks for the great work on this site.

Well, there's also options like the long tap as a probable possibility. Tap and hold, and maybe bring up a dialogue to be explicit and prevent accidental use.
