so I leave the mail page open for days at a time and when I notice the yellow mail icon on another tab I refresh the mail one to see the messages.
after reading that day's messages, sometimes and only sometimes despite further refreshes the yellow icon stays and the message colour indicates unread. then click the yellow icon and everything looks as it should till the next time.
