Email to Kindle function

Picard ๐Ÿšซ

Until recently, the Email to Kindle function would result in the Title and Author showing correctly on my Kindle.

Now, when using this function, I see a series of 5 numbers, eg 25847 as title and Unknown for Author.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I haven't seen this, but I haven't done a download in a while.

How 'Recently'?

In May/June I switched the mailer from sending .mobi files to sending EPUB files because Amazon said so.

So is it around that time that started or more recently?

I don't know if there is something that I can do about Amazon's conversion to whatever format they're converting the EPUB files to.

One thing you can do is download the .mobi format from the site to your computer and sync it to your kindle.

The tile show the file name (a number if sent with SoL) or the attachment file name when emailed by me.

When I forward earlier working versions from the 20/9 after you removed part of the guide they work (however, I'm not sure yet if it's due to an Amazon conversion cache behavior). I'll try some other file and let you know.

Ok, It looks like the guide change is to blame after all.
I'm looking at solutions.

It would be interesting to see what Amazon support says about it.

Files from the 19 September sent to amazon today have the same problem, so the guide change isn't to blame.

Current files still pass the epub validator 4.2.6

I believe I last successfully used the email to kindle function on 22nd Sept.

I have tried the download and manual sync method and it works. Looks like it's the processing that Amazon does when it is emailed.

My last two downloads have arrived with numbers as titles. Both were transferred in the past week. The delivers took place on September 29th and 27th. The SOL delivery before that September 18th arrived with the correct title.

Problem is with Amazon servers conversion from epub, even Baen ebooks land with author "UNKNOWN"

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@Gauthier

Currently, all archival files - EPUB, .mobi, TXT and Zip - are saved on the server using the story's ID number. When downloaded, the files are renamed on the fly according to the user's preference.

It's basically always been like this, but previously, when I emailed .mobi files, the kindle got the file name from the file's meta data.

It seems something changed in Amazon's conversion process and now they're ignoring the EPUB's built in meta data.

So even if I rename the file before attaching to the email message, the author would still be unknown.

It will take some work, but I'll attach the file with proper file name.

On some of the test I did, the title was sometimes correct for example after importing to Calibre and sending the epub to Kindle by email trough Calibre. I did not identify the change calibre did to the epub that amazon liked.
But the author always said "UNKNOWN".

I believe amazon will correct their error at some point.

Importing the books in Kindle Previewer has a warning (lack of reference to the cover) but the metadata are shown correctly.

Calibre opted to send the epub attached file as "title - author.epub".

I've seen some report of attached filename issue with the email encoding messing non ascii file name. I'm not sure utf8 filenames are welcomed by the amazon servers.
