Is it possible to paste images into sol emails?

Joe Long ๐Ÿšซ

The subject covers it all. Is there a way to paste an image to show someone a photo?

Not currently, no.

It's a frequently requested feature, but it's a highly costly one.

With only one year of storage of read text messages, with two years max for unread messages, the current storage requirement for the messages database is around 1 GB (about 100,000 messages).

If I were to support image attachments, these requirements could easily grow by 10 folds as images are way way bigger than plain text messages. Server storage isn't exactly cheap.

If I were ever to allow images, then I would have to make them somewhat ephemeral to disappear a short time after the recipient views them, even if they mark the message as unread.

What about a way to make them appear inline with an HTML tag? Then the storage is the responsibility of the sender. Yes, links work now, but an inline image would solve the problem (though clickable links would be nice).

I suspect this would be far down your priority list, and I'd rather you work on site features and revenue generating ideas. :-)

EDITED TO ADD: Never mind. I am usually security conscious and paranoid, and I have no idea why I made such a silly suggestion about images. Clickable links would be nice, though.

That may work right now with a simple link to an online photo. Probably no display of the image in the message, but the link is there to at least copy & paste.

There are limits as to how many html features it's safe to permit, automatic loading of external images does not sound that safe to me.

Me too. If it is implemented, I'd like to see a user-selectable option for it to be disabled, on behalf of security conscious recipients.

Long long ago there was a Yahoo Group which some of us will have been members of, it vanished abruptly and was then replaced by another one.

One of the first posts in the new group was by the owner of both groups saying the old one had been terminated for what I think was a kiddie-porn violation. He had allowed images to be uploaded and someone had uploaded something really unpleasant and then - presumably - told Yahoo that they were hosting illegal content. The owner's wife had just left him and his suspicion was that she was heavily involved. Yahoo were no help at all, they refused to say which account had uploaded the content and (probably correctly) who the whistle blower was.

The new group no longer permitted images to be uploaded, several members of the group had their own and some group policies were changed rather quickly.

@Joe Long

If an image was hosted offsite, the managers of this site would have no way of stopping the remote site changing the image being altered - to an advert, say, or something more objectionable. Please don't allow this, whether in stories, posts or messages.
