Send to Kindle Always opens at the last chapter on first open.

merlyn2748 ๐Ÿšซ

When I use the send-to-kindle feature it send the file to my kindle (ePub format) without issue. However, when I open the file the first time it always places the book at the beginning of the last chapter.

It isn't the end of the world, as I can always just flip back to the first page. But, when I try using the sync to furthest page function between devices it still sees that location near the end of the book as the furthest location.

I have tested this with multiple stories, including those I have read before and those I have never read or downloaded in the past.

I've seen the same thing.

There is nothing that I can do on my end to fix this.

The site sends the EPUB to amazon and amazon's mail-to-kindle service converts it to whatever format is now internally supported on the Kindles, and that is completely out of the originating site's control.

Why it doesn't start at the beginning of the book is a mystery the cause of which is only known to amazon's software development team.

Maybe it would help if you report the issue to Amazon, they're the ones that can fix it (if they want to).

The EPUB generated by SoL are valid according to the W3C epubcheck.

I tried editing the SOL EPUB of "Play It Again, Sam by POL"

with some info gleaned online on the start point definition.

* added linear="yes" since most working title had that.

That should not be needed as it's the default and as expected, that didn't change anything.

* added the cover & intro to the guide -> Didn't work

* added [a id="start"][/a] to info.xhtml -> Didn't work

* also added [reference type="text" title="Beginning" href="info.xhtml#start" /] to the [guide] -> Didn't work either.

* shortened the guide to include only one type="text" -> That worked!

* completely removed the guide -> That worked

* added a last guide entry: [reference type="text" title="Information" href="info.xhtml" /] -> That worked too.

That last one is the best possible workaround, if you want to keep the guide.

According to some source Amazon set the reading start at the first "text" following a toc in a guide, but the ncx is not a traditional toc page.

So I guess that the guide having no toc, Amazon consequently and stupidly use the last "text" as the starting point.

I went back and read the EPUB 2.0 specs. The guide section is optional!

I changed my code to add one guide entry for the info file.

That should fix it I guess.

Now I only see one entry in the guide.

Obviously that solve the problem for the Kindle reader.

I'm not clear as to how the various old reader software will react to that change.

That need more testing from the non Kindle users.

I'll check with those I have.

Are there settings on your Kindle that would control that? You might want to browse the settings.

Nope I've checked for that. Ebooks from SOL on my kindle jump to the beginning of the last chapter when you use the Go To Beginning function which normally goes to the beginning of chapter 1.

I've tested this and it's consistent.

I haven't seen the same problem with ebooks from other third party sources.

Therefore even if the problem is happening on Amazon's end in the conversion process, there has to be something different about ebooks from SOL that is driving it.

Lazeez, when you do a download from SOL, is it doing something, anything to mark the last chapter you read on SOL?

The one thing is I've only tested it with stories I've read on SOL.

@Dominions Son

I also don't see this behavior when I directly email EPUB files that I create myself from other sources to the Amazon mail-to-kindle service. Only with EPUB files created and sent from SOL.

Again, not a huge deal for me, but I also suspect the culprit could be whatever library Lazeeze is using to create the EPUB files.

@merlyn2748

The other thing I suspect is if for multi-chapter stories not all posted at once, if he's adding to the existing e-pub rather than building a fresh epub from scratch each time a chapter is added, that could be the problem.
