The background theme of the series is bringing Psi people together and prospering. What if the ability is actually driving the accumulation/expanding of talent. Maybe Mercy's triplets or Lisa's Quads do the research into the power.

Does the Florida Friends series involve psychic powers? If that's mentioned in descriptions or codes, I've missed it! Series is on my list, but, since I like a bit of the fantastical in my reading, I'd likely move it up if I knew this!

In the 2nd book of the series, Vacation 2, the Steve meets a woman, Mercy, who has a mild ability to read minds and project thoughts to others she inherited from her mother, Missy. Mercy joins Steve and Sue in a group marriage arrangement.In another story in the series Chuck joins them and learns he has a similar ability, so does Lisa. Later they learn they're all distantly related and descended from the same small group when Chuck's aunt and her two granddaughters join them as all three have the ability. The children of Mercy also have the ability, as do Chuck's children. Those who have the ability can readily use telepathy between them.
Money! Has Chuck 2, his sister, and his backup, all having the 'gift' as well. Not only is it a telepathy and precog ability, but Chuck 1 shows some telekinesis ability as well, and Chuck 2 has some mild form of mind control.
Not sure, I haven't got far in it yet, my ADHD keeps showing me 'shiny' stories that distract me from my goal.
The story is incomplete, but I seem to remember it merging with the Florida Friends Universe in the latter stages.
