It was a dark and stormy night

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

In, say, the year 1984 (to pick a year at random), plagiarist Joe Schmoe wrote a novel and the opening line was "It was a dark and stormy night."
Now, when a 21st century author used that same line as the opening of a chapter in a best-selling novel, Joe Schmoe sued for damages, saying he owned the copyright and that he had registered the copyright when he published his book in 1984.
All the shenanigans involved in the legal case, and delving into the history of the sentence at issue could be fun to write. Such a story would almost certainly require colorful characters.

Would lose, in a court case. Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1830 novel "Paul Clifford" was the original source of that line.

And if that's how a fiction writer wanted the story to come out, that would be one way to write it. Or, the court's ruling in the case could be the opening scene.

Two of whom could be The Dark Knight and the Stormy Knight.

Joust a thought...

:)

Maybe it was sibling rivalry and Joe sued his brother Eski?

Stormy Knight was a prostitute paid off by the king.

Stormy Knight was a prostitute paid off by the king.

More likely Stormy Knight got miffed and stormed out of the kingdom, writing her own novel of the family in a less than flattering light.

An angry transgender noble of colour.

Anyone inclined to that sort of language wouldn't see knights as noble.

Knighthoods are a form of minor nobility in the UK, but since the titles are mainly donated to hangers-on and party hacks, ignoble would be a better term ;-)

If anyone tried to sue over use of that line, Snoopy would kick their ass.
