An intellectual exercise 8/10/20

Well a question recently came to mind during a story i'm writing.

Let's suppose a mortal angel (emphasis on mortal) wanted to take flight what gear would they need on a practical level?

After thinking about it myself my conclusions are
some kind of suit to regulate body temperature
a parachute
altimeter
some sort of basic survival gear?
oxygen for limited high level flights

Anyone else have any thoughts?

A hang glider? Not much else needed if not to high or a too cold climate.

Doesn't sound much like an angel, but ok. First you need to spell out what powers this angel does have. Being mortal and without any powers, would mean just a regular person.

De-icer to de-ice wings.

Thinsulated gloves so they can play their harp en route.

None.

If their deity sees fit to grant them flight, surely that would include everything necessary...

(Oh and a damn good lawyer and bodyguards as the church couldn't accept a mortal angel created without their controlling it.)

You realize there are suits that allow 'flight' (actually more like gliding) if you start from altitude? So the parachute and altimeter aren't that necessary.
But assuming you have a need, I suggest a decent GPS system. Altimeters are calibrated to sea level. If your 'angel' flies into a cloud, the old pilot's line comes to mind - sometimes, a mountain will hide in that cloud.

If by "mortal angel" you are referring to a winged humanoid capable of natural flight, I would presume that they are adapted to functioning at altitude.

If not, start with some sort of aircraft.

You can get a lot of the answers in Deja Vu Ascendancy as the MC in that develops God like powers and pretends to be an angel, but needs to do things to enable him to play the role, and some of those things include protections etc.

If going to high altitudes, a pressure suit will be needed.

For those that operate at high altitudes, the suit is much more than just temperature. They are tightly constricting, to help keep the flow of blood at lower atmospheric pressures. Many even use other systems to occasionally compress the limps, to assist in this blood flow.

What type of equipment the 'mortal angel' would need would depend a lot on what other powers besides flight they might have.

Something else to consider, before setting up their 'equipment pack' - how far are they physically capable of flying/gliding before needing to stop to rest.

A third thing to consider - What will the angel be doing? For instance, flights the angel makes between their home and either school, friends' homes, or work could need a different set of gear than for instance an angel who works at search and rescue.

Having said all that, depending on the first issue I raised, the angel might want to keep a supply of energy bars on hand.

Ask Charlie - he's accustomed to kitting out angels ;-)

There is at least one of the MORFS universe stories that touch on this. It might actually be titled Angel.

There is at least one of the MORFS universe stories that touch on this. It might actually be titled Angel.

On the 'Morfs Universe' website there is a story called Higher and Higher which briefly talks about winged humans and some regulations they have to operate under.
