Forum: Story Ideas

Taxonomy of high school strata

Jason Samson ๐Ÿšซ

Ok, I confess, this isn't a story idea, its just research for a story idea! But this seemed the best forum anyhow. I tried asking some history research in the Authors forum, and a few nice people did reply, but it it still feels like asking here will reach a wider audience.

So, apology aside, here's my question:

In the US school system, what are the normal defined groups of students?

I've heard of jocks and cheerleaders and geeks and nerds and, I think, stoners.

I've also recently read a story that mentioned that boys split girls into three groups: those too ugly to admit to, those pretty enough and approachable, and those unobtainable.

Please, list all the various taxonomies you can!

(Stupidly, I'm planning on basing my next story in a US school. And yet my entire understanding of the US school system is from other SOL stories... so I'm expecting I might have the whole thing out of kilter from the start!)

What timeframe? Things were different decade to decade.

I'm thinking provisionally 1990s, but am interested in any time period really

If some cliques come and go, being told that is also useful!

The names for some of the groups will change over place/time, but there are certain cliques that are mostly timeless. There will also be some kids who cross over these groups.

Jocks: Team sports promotes camaraderie.

Same goes for the Cheerleaders.

The smart kids(geeks/nerds/brain trust). What they get called changes, but their place in the school social structure doesn't change nearly as much.

The rich kids. Even in public schools, out side of really poor inner city areas, you get some students with upper middle class or wealthy parents. The poor kids are less socially cohesive.

The beautiful people: Kids that are popular due to looks. Tends to have large overlap with the rich kids.

Where the school is located matters.

A school in rural Texas might have a popular jock subgroup for Rodeo, or just a redneck clique, and little or no involvement with urban cliques like the LGBT and/or political subgroups.

In San Diego, CA, there might be a clique of surfers and beach bums, while in Olympia, WA, there is a tree-hugger club that practically rules the school and dictates policy for things like a green Prom.

Once you have a timeline and a location, you can start narrowing down your focus.

In Jay Cantrell's Unforgettable Days/Weeks, IIRC, the 'queen' of the school is a Hispanic girl who doesn't seem to be the richest. In most other stories, the 'queen' seems to be the head cheerleader, always blonde, who is very rich, spoiled and shallow. Just how realistic is it for the school royalty to be nice normal people?

Why on earth would nice "normal"* people want to be in that position?

Seriously you might as well ask why there are no nice "normal" people in politics.

The people driven to be in control in life tend to be neither nice, nor "normal"

Cream rises to the top, but then so does scum.

*There is no such thing as normal. Normal exists only in the imaginations of people who get paid to make other people "normal".

In answer to your question

Just how realistic is it for the school royalty to be nice normal people?

The villain of the story almost never sees themselves as the villain of the story.

There will be the occasional queen bee who is nice to the peasants because it amuses her to be seen as magnanimous.

A queen bee who sees the rest of the school as her subjects and treats them that way, bestowing her favors on some and doling out punishment or retribution on others while ignoring the masses.

Maybe your queen bee has a soft spot for a particular type.... the abused girl, the weakest guy, the handicapped student. Perhaps there is one student in whom she sees herself but for the vicissitudes of chance (and luck in choosing parents).

Maybe the queen is being nice, but has an ulterior motive like pissing off mommy, or her arch-enemy?

Reality is what you decide and what you can convince your readers to swallow without kvetching.
