Methods of Communication

richardshagrin 🚫

This probably isn't a very well formed story idea, but then again its the author's job to add plot, characters, various twists, shake well and decant a story. These are stray thoughts.

Someone develops a new or previously underutilized method of sending messages or perhaps other items, pictures, emotional experiences, sexual excitement and orgasms (like SOL but without using a computer), or some other useful and valuable item (in the sense of being worth paying for.) How does he or she, or they do it, what challenges do they face and how do they overcome them? Can they use mechanical, electronic or telepathic means to communicate.

Historically there are verbal methods (not just words), visual like gestures or signal flags or smoke signals. Messenger services like the US Post Hole Service, or the combination of Federal Express and United Parcel called Fed Up, or drones (a new method of air mail). There are lots of mails, like Snail Mail, E mail, and Black mail. And the traditional Telegraph, telephone, and tell a woman.

Clearly one way would be a business success story, with male hero and female assistants. Oh, that's another kind of male or femail.

I just did it. It's an as yet unpublished story, "The Boy Who Poked the Devil in the Eye". It's the sequel to my "Stranded" story. It deals with aliens, but features a new alien race that communicates telepathically in a way the messages can't be intercepted (it's a "hard science" story).

Unfortunately, it won't be published until next year, and it won't show up on SOL until quite a while after that.

My "Catalyst" series also dealt with this idea, as a young teenager discovers he can communicate telepathically, and struggles to understand why (they resort to having his brain scanned with fMRIs to figure out what's happening. Like my other stories, it's based on actual physics principals. This ability was also sexually based, as he'd 'boost' other's during sex acts so they could initiate telepathic communication, rather than simply receiving them.

Sorry if making this suggestion hurt your story or feelings in any way. Perhaps great minds think alike? I hope if anyone does use this idea they treat their story differently than the ones you wrote. I don't remember the exact number but somewhere someone said there are only n plots and all stories use variations of them. As long as its different in some important way(s) it can still be a good story.

Story Idea: Romeo and Juliet except they don't die.

Sorry, Richard, I wasn't taking offense, just describing how the idea had been used, in one particular instance. The idea wasn't to insist that it was my idea, and my idea alone, rather it was to provide an example of how the idea can be implemented. You, or anyone else, is free to take the technique--which is all it really is--in whichever directions you want.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was also thinking of it as a 'request for stories' posting.
