Amplification

ralord82276 🚫

Imagine a world where every natural substance amplifies and re-directs sound waves. Sound itself above the smallest whisper could easily be deadly. Now imagine being part of a team that has to go to this world to harvest/mine some needed/highly sought after material.
What precautions do you take? Are there other dangers besides the amplification to worry about? How long will the mission take? How will the stress of having to minimize every sound 24/7 affect the mission members? What if the mission was a cover for something else? Something more sinister?

Surely even the smallest whisper could be deadly if amplified enough times.

Probably so... but I am thinking that the number of times it would have to interact with things to be amplified enough to be lethal would take long enough for the sound waves to travel beyond interaction range. In other words, sound waves don't travel along the curvature of the earth...even being re-directed occasionally, they would still pretty quickly travel above the interaction range with anyone on the ground. Unless there was a dome high above to re-direct sounds back to ground level, low sounds would most often not have time to be amplified enough to be lethal before being out of interaction range.

In other words, sound waves don't travel along the curvature of the earth...

IIRC the presure wave from the explosion of Krakatoa was reported to travel around the world thrice, following the curvature of the earth. The sound itself was heard 3000 miles away.
