Trade Romances

ralord82276 🚫

Oyster50 is known for his "electrical engineering" tradeskill romances. I would like to see some authors do similar stories with other tradeskills: civil/mechanical engineering, welding, plumbing, etc. I like Oyster50's stories not just for the relationship aspect but also because they give a little glimpse into the tradeskill that the average individual would never see in RL.

there is at least one about welding - Pixy Welding Inc by Romulus Twin. I had hoped he would continue but he took hand damage and faded away.

There's a dead tree series of mechanical eng. time travel books by Leo Frankowski called the Conrad Stargard series. A modern (1986, when the first book was published) engineer wakes up in 13th century Poland and decides to start the industrial revolution 500 years early as a defence against the Mongols.

A lot of wish fulfilment and the protagonist is a bit of an ass, especially in later books, but the early books are a fast read and can be fun if you turn off your brain. There were 9 books in the series but the 8th was self-published and the 9th published several years after the author's death.

Agreed. There are a lot of jobs that could be interesting, not just engineering. Looks like the main criteria for a story would be something that pays well and/or has some status, plus allows ample free time to get into mischief.

Pilot, perhaps? Cruise ship Doctor, Park Ranger, Forensics tech?

I met a guy once who spoke 12 languages fluently. He didn't need to work full time, but worked all over the world as needed. Today, the UN, tomorrow, Saudi Arabia, lunch with the Queen on Thursday...
