Lots of good stories on this site about college athletics. Plus it's a frame in many stories. I'm reading a set of traditionally-published romance stories now where the guys are all college hockey players. Not a lot of hockey stuff, it's just the frame.
But, what I haven't seen, likely because it is so new, is anything where Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) contracts that have just been allowed by the NCAA come into play. This is some pretty serious money (up to $7 million). Seems like that raises all kinds of interesting possibilities.
*Suddenly wealthy going wild
*Sudden wealth used to care for family
*Sudden wealth leading to being blackmailed/sued
and probably lots of others.
Could be fun. Not sure how one would research it. And, no nostalgia -- these would be thoroughly contemporary stories.
