I just ran across a news story about a new determination that "Roman" coins long thought to have been fake are likely authentic, but produced by a "Emperor" (maybe) who was a military commander of a Roman post in what is now Transylvania in the 200s C.E. Discovered in 1713, the coins were deemed fake by the leading authority of that time, but recent re-analysis, both historical and physical, suggests they were made and circulated in this remote but still functioning part of the Roman empire.
There's just something about this that grabs me. I feel like there's a story in there, but likely not one I could write. Anyway, thought I would throw it out there. Anyone ever get ideas from things like this?
