Scrap spaceship to nearly overpowered

marwood2013 ๐Ÿšซ

I've read a few short stories on here with the MC is living/working in a spaceship graveyard and peices together a seemingly overpowered ship from what was left in the derelict ships.
Are there any similar stories that are a longer than 5 chapters?

can't think of any but am interested in checking out the ones you've read. Can you list them here? Thanks

@sunseeker

'To Walk the Constellations' by Dragon Cobolt starts like that.

I can vaguely remember others but authors and titles currently escape me. A search for 'spaceship junkyard' all words didn't turn up anything I remembered.

Well there's also Three square meals by telfer...
At least it's mentioned in the beginning chapters...

If I remember there are at least a couple by Ka Hmnd but I cannot remember the titles and with 266 stories...

Ka Hmnd's Guardian comes close. His Drone Fighter has some of those elements as well.

I found a couple by Ka Hmnd during my searches but they were both only about 5000 words.

"A poor boys spaceship" is another one.

There's a much more recent example, but I can't recall the name, as the author kind of went around then bend in the story and I quit reading it about 5 or 6 chapters ago. It was posting about every other day for a little while, but has been quiet since.

Ah, here it is: The Adventures of Tim Bodge. It starts out great, then really grinds to a complete halt towards the end, but the premise is still great.

@Vincent Berg

I agree "The Adventures of Tim Bodge" is a great premise, but it suffers the same problem most harem stories do. Girls get continuously added without advancing the plot.

Which causes the writing to grind to a halt.

I also admit that i've never seen a great list on what you should do and not do with stories involving turning a scrap space ship into something overpowered.

turning a scrap space ship into something overpowered.

Something that is 'overpowered' is defeated. Shouldn't the description be something like 'overpowering'?

In this context, overpowered is more like over-kill rather than defeated.

And yes, this usage of overpowered is out there. See definition #3 for overpower below.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/overpowered

Definition of overpower

transitive verb

1 : to overcome by superior force : subdue

2 : to affect with overwhelming intensity
the stench overpowered us

3 : to provide with more power than is needed or desirable
a dangerously overpowered car

It doesn't seem to have reached British dictionaryland yet. Still, OED only checks entries every ten years and British English allegedly takes five years to acknowledge new Americanisms so it could be a while before we catch up :-(

Which is odd, because that usage of overpowered in the US isn't anywhere near that new.

I'll be 53 this September and it goes back to at least my childhood.

But you Muricans love your muscle cars, not having to worry about fuel prices.

I've heard the expression 'overcarred' (sp?) used to describe a driver in charge of a car they're not capable of handling safely.

I think one of Vanessa Ravencrofts stories had a Baddie Admiral secreting top secret prototype spaceships in a scrapyard as a backup plan for an escape.
