what i can remember is kid is hated by step mom and goes to live with his aunt then joins kings military. it is set in a sword and archery type setting but not our earth with magic being possible. think it cam out in the last 2 years but not positive any help would be appreciated

This would fit a story of Ernest Bywater's Clan Amir series – The Shukra War, but the plot pieces you posted originally don't fit at all.

wasnt that one either, im about to just give up looking cause i think im losing my mind, i know he is a young man sent to live with his grandmother and lives in the forest meets some mercs and then is riding somewhere and meets some i think natives or something and they become allies then he starts fighting for a king and in a war just not positive about the order of events
I thought of that one as well but it does not fit the original requirements at all. The first Jay Cantrell story was the best fit, and I have no idea what it could be if it is not that.
