I am trying to remember the name of the story I read a while ago. The only detail I really recall is a female singer (country?) getting together with the male MC, and causing a breakup to use the heartbreak for her new album. I think it was probably only a small part of one serial or another but I'm not sure which. Any ideas?

He's not really failed - he suffered an injury that would not let him play ball anymore. Luckily he had managed his finances so he could finish his college studies and get a good job.
True, I was using 'failed' as shorthand for 'highschool king of the jocks loses his dream career while weird nerdette from drug family gains hers.'
The story is an inversion of some of the coming of age tropes on here and well worth reading.

IIRC, I found that part confusing. The protagonist claimed he barely knew her, but didn't she spend a lot of time at his house and regard his mother as a second mother?

He downplays how important he and his family were to her so he doesn't come across as a braggart to his colleagues but they were really important to her because of how shitty her family etc. were. Although that's only from what I remember, didn't actually read that much of it for various reasons.
There is a country singer in Lubrican's gigolo series who can't have a relationship with MC in the long term for reasons but I think she dedicates a song to him? It's been a while since I read that.
I may be way off base here because it's a very long time since I read the stories, but didn't Cold Creek's 'Defenceman' saga have something like that as a minor sub-plot?

Path to glory has this plot where mc dated a country singer and when they broke up she wrote songs about the mc.
