I hope I'm not combining 2 stories. Father and son have a business towing abandoned cars. Son finds car with large amount of cash, jewels, something. He somehow gets transported to Darkover from the Marion Zimmer Bradley books. Kind of a sad, lonely story.

I was combining stories but not how I'd thought. That's the story but with a different ending than I remember. Must have been from a dead tree short story in the Darkover Universe. Thank you, Julian.
There are four of Howard's stories linked to Darkover, that I'm aware of. They are - 'A New Matrix', 'Cleaning Up', 'Laran Legacy' and 'The Wild Child'. Could be you're linking the ending from one of the others?
