Hope somebody can give me a hint. Coming of age story. Hero incident by male MC. In high school mensa/dining hall he see a guy, he ist not on friendly terms with, wearing long trench coat despite hot weather, suspects school shooter similar Columbine, tackles him and indeed that guy carries several weapons. If my memory is right, the story is incomplete. Later on at least one intelligence or security agency shows their interest.
The story was completed a couple of years ago, although I found the ending to be a Frankenstein's monster. The way I remember it, Al Quaeda and the Iranians were working together to hit this school in some hellhole in southern Texas. There was more to the plot than that but I found the concept of the equivalents of the Inquisition and the Calvinists working together to be pretty lunatic (assuming I got that right, I dumped the story at that point).

Agreed, but it's fiction. The story could have done with less sex but that's just my preference. Overall I found it a good story if you disregard the discrepancies and just go with the flow.
