home built underground

rustyken ๐Ÿšซ

I read a story a while back that had the MC building a home in I believe the west that was partially or fully underground. It was located on some acreage that he owned or inherited. One characteristic of the house was that it had a large window.

I would do a search but at this moment not sure how the configure it. Perhaps if I think of it for a while, more of the events in it will come back.

Cheers

Do a story text search for 'hobbit'.

I recall the story, I'm not sure it was finished. The MC was young, highly intelligent, and from a fairly wealthy family.

Although as mentioned, William Redman Carrter also fits, although there's much more about that story that's really memorable, like the server farm that predicts the future...

One I can immediately remember is Lazlo Zalezac's William Redman Carter (part of his John Carter universe); it's built into the top of a cliff with the large picture window looking out over a canyon.

Was the MC building the home or was he living in the home built into the ground? In Shiloh the MC inherits a home his grandfather built into the mountain side with a huge window looking out over Rio Grande River and the desert.

Back in the early Usenet days, someone posted a very long story about an out of work guy winning a state lottery in the teen millions and buying a 50 or 100 acre lot complete with used missile silo, and turning it into his home. "Castle in the Sand" or something like that. Got tied up with the Feds 'cause the Soviets were still monitoring that site, and when he opened the silo door and was framing out levels his arc welders were triggering "launch alerts" ...

used missile silo

-but it didn't have big windows - the only outside view was the sunroof eventually put in under the silo roof. "Castle in the Sand", Deana Johns - a search will turn it up.

"Castle in the Sand" or something like that.

D.J. 'Doc' Pedersen / Deana Johns - Castle in the Sand. With a little searching you should still be able to find it on the net.

How time flies, the story (first chapter) is from 25 years ago this year.

there is a story about an underground house set in . . . Texas(?) I do not remember if it had the window. It is by Celtic Cowboy. It IS premier though. I will try to think of others.

Hmm, RoustWriter's story has a big window and later an underground bunker

Celtic Cowboy. Yeah, that's the story I think I was thinking of first. But the window? That's definitely from William Redman Carter. (The MC in A New Past had a similar home built in the Arizona desert, but it was only in a minor arroyo, not a canyon, so the window wasn't as significant.) But like I said, hard to see the 'defining characteristic' of WRC being the house, and nothing about the seeing the future coming up.

Howard Faxton had a couple.

There was a story about a retired professor that rescued a lady from a blizzard on the way home in Colorado.

I know there are more but it is late and my brain is shutting down.

Thanks for the effort, but a member advised me that the story is "A Long Way Home" by Asa Strong and in on another site.

Cheers
