I've been trying to find this and searching and failing horribly. I'm hoping that I'm just horrible at searching and someone else knows it. It begins with the idea of a teen boy interrupts the sacrifice of a teen girl to a demon. The soccerer dies (setting is contemporary world) and he gets the ability to influence people and can smell their relationship to him via scents like cinnamon and coffee. I read it and pretty sure I voted on it but I'm not finding it even going through lists of both.
