I read this a few years back. it was about a man or woman visiting the sick bed of a lover. s/he talks about the time they had together - Sexual encounters sweet nothings. then the lover opens her eyes. s/he then says goodbye and leaves the lover to the lovers family. emphasizing that they never got together. I didn't have a library when I first read it and I want to add it to my library now.

The tear jerker which gets me every time is also a death bed situation, but it's not the one you're looking for. The sad scene is late in the novel, but the whole thing is excellent.
