California man saves the planet

dougb ๐Ÿšซ

OK, I'm hoping someone out there will recognize this story. I think I read it about 10 years ago. It was another apocalyptic story where most of mankind had been killed off (but I don't remember how). Anyway, a California man establishes a compound/fort in the California desert which slowly grows in size. It safes humanity. Later, as I recall, there was a sequel that was set many years after where the community had moved to central California. By this time the original man/savor is considered nothing but a myth until his bones and a notebook are found in a desert cave. Apparently he died from a snake bite. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

@dougb

i4pepsi2 is correct, specifically it is Shakes Peer2B's Getting By. He started the sequel, but it's unfinished.

Shakes Peer2B is on a hiatus. If his words are true he will be back around the start of 2021:

If it is the one I am thinking of,this is the only story I can recall where in a post apocalyptic world the survivors hae problems with roaming packs of dogs. Always thought in such a world nature would reclaim the world at the expence of humans.

Incorrect.

I believe MisguidedChild had a PostApoc story where dogs were similarly a problem.
And I think feral dogs were a bit of a problem in Aftermath as well, although not as prevalent since not many survived, and armed survivors would hunt anything.

There are others around - Where the Mountain Rises by Fofo Xuxu, for example.

Feral dogs would be a problem in a post apocalyptic environment.
Most of them have no fear of humans at all, which is not the case with many other animals, this gives them a head start preying on humans.

Short term yes, long term I wonder. Chernobyl apparently has wolves and bears making a come back in the exclusion zone. I've not read anything about feral dogs or other forms of livestock persisting in the area.
I'm not an expert though, so I could be wrong.

I've not read anything about feral dogs or other forms of livestock persisting in the area.

It's going to depend on a large number of factors.

Were the domestic animals left behind or evacuated with the people?

Were the domestic animals left behind let loose or left confined in houses/pens.

Left confined, domestic animals wouldn't last long without people to take care of them.

All the way back to the classic 1949 "Earth Abides," there is a wave of feral dogs and another wave of feral cats threatening the survivors.
