The protagonist was struck by lightning or suffers grief from his mother's death.
He learns he'd developed the ability to visualise/manipulate/create matter. He starts with tinkering with lock picking and his power grows as the story runs its course. He had some relationship issue with his wife/GF (due to her parents. He ends up disappearing them from existence). In the end he cleans the pollution from the planet and moves to somewhere else.
