HELP:Recent lost story - recently fired scientist recalled to fix wonky gear - leads to alien abduction to fix knackered engine - hi-jinx ensues

aliens use physicist to repair engine, and keep him for trip round the galaxy. human re-sleeved in various alien/android bodies including giant ferrets/otters? He is sidekick to a giant genius spider , with anger management issues! (Not a description I've used frequently?!). Spends his time cuddling? (in furry form!) and re-writing the science of the various flt engines?

please help have spent all day going through this forum, found lots to add to my reading list, just not what I,m after ..

Sounds like a story by artie. Unfortunately he pulled most or all of his stories after he married and she didn't like him writing "porn". There are ten on Beyond the Far Horizon, and some may still be on ASSTR. There is a short one left here on SOL, not sure why.

You are confusing Artie with someone else, he was pretty explicit as to why he was pulling all of his stories although there may also have been some negative feedback "issues" after he changed the direction of Open Clinic.
- He had a "mild stroke in mid-June" 2011.
- In October he wrote: "My recovery is slower than I'd expected/hoped. I'd hoped for asymptotic to where I'd been before; that may turn out to be hope and not reality" while posting the two chapters of Open Clinic.
- 3 days later (Oct 11) he announced he was pulling all of his stories "before the end of December 2011". Why?

Lots of reasons, many of them personal, but among them: I'm getting old, I'm running out of time, I have more important things I need to do with what little time I have, some parts aren't fun anymore, I'm not sure who I'm writing for, and a bunch of shit like that.

I think it was January 2012 before he followed through on that.
Looking on the Wayback Machine for www.asstr.org/~artie/tdoa.html would be one way to locate the story, the one madnige named.

I think you're after Artie's 'Time of Arrival'; the only bit of your description that doesn't fit is that after he is picked up, he's reshelled into a spider himself, not just a sidekick to one (he becomes the ship's engineer), and the spiders are NOT genius level (they have the curiosity of two boxes of rocks); he becomes sidekick to a giant blue banana-slug later. The story is incomplete, 9 chapters.

Chapter 2 can't be found, i managed to get chapters 8 and 9 but none others. After chapter 1 just play around on the page
