Alien race controls interstellar travel. Aliens claims humans cannot survive the flight. Man stows away on ship and does in fact suffer during initial flight, but survives it. If I recall correctly, they don't want to allow him to return home.

It was late 70's when I first read it. Fairly sure it was published internationally as the copy I had was purchased in Portsmouth England.

Anyone here know this book by chance?

@limab

That's a good one but not it. Thanks for the reply.

I have very vague recollection of a story I read published in the 70s or early 80s. The main character had his ancestry from Cornwall or Brittany, and that heritage gave him resistance to interstellar travel. Does that sound familiar?

Definitely published before the 80's since I read it late 70's. The heritage part rings a bell, but can't recall the specifics. Thanks.

Possibly Dreadful Sanctuary by Eric Frank Russell, but it is a long time since I read that one

It could possibly be Childhoods End by Arthur C Clarke

That's the one I was reading that twigged my memory on Starmen of Llyrdis.

Further contemplation makes me think

The Starmen by Leigh Brackett

Michael Trehearne had always been an outcast among his people on Earth. He knew he was different. He did not know how or why. Then one day, on the wind-swept coast of Brittany, a bewitchingly beautiful girl appeared and told him he had the look of the Vardda - those elite star travelers who alone could withstand the rigors of intergalactic flight.

Also published by Ballantine Books in 1976 under the original magazine title of The Starmen of Llyrdis.

I don't know if this is the story OP was looking for, but it's definitely the one I remember. Thanks!
