It was a story I read many moons ago about a guy who collects a heap strange mushrooms falls asleep amongst their spores and wakes up with powers No idea of the name (too long ago)
thanks

You'd think, if magical powers worked that easily, you'd expect all sorts of mind-control bunnies and rats, forcing humans to feed them freshly cooked hamburger rather than the week-old trash they ordinarily get!
I wonder if those mind control bunnies (being vegan) would ask for impossible burgers.
The Vorpal Bunny of Caerbannog is carnivorous. Or the Python's were consuming mushrooms.
I had a young man working on a trial basis for a few days who went into great depth on his consumption of wild psychoactive fungi.
Attempting to experience death without dieing, trying to chew through a tree trunk at a rave party and publicly challenging a known mob killer to fight bare knuckled in a McDonalds stuck in my mind.
He was not offered further employment.
In fiction we can imagine positive benefits and many have. If the story is not on SOL then there is a fandom wiki page on spore manipulation that lists a number of comic and manga universes that have used the idea.

I vote mushrooms. Then again they may have just been tapped...
